    The word you’re looking for is VISCOSITY, not velocity. Viscosity is a measure of resistance to deformation at a certain rate, so basically the ‘thickness’ of the nectar.

    • @beefitbeekeeping
      @beefitbeekeeping День назад

      I appreciate the correction! 🙂 but I really do mean to use the word velocity. If feeding with a high viscosity, meaning putting more sugar in a sugar water mixture, the bees will be more inclined to store it rather than draw comb. But if feeding at a high velocity, meaning not just putting on a quart sized jar for them to draw comb (in that situation, sugar water is not coming in at a rate high enough to stimulate them to draw wax, they will instead consume it as food) but instead putting on a gallon bucket or a 1.5gal frame feeder of 1:1 will bring sugar water in at a velocity high enough to keep their wax glands turned on. Drawing comb takes a lot of energy so there is a balance between the sugar content and rate in which is it coming into the hive in order to get the result you are looking for.

  • @mssmooth961
    @mssmooth961 2 дня назад

    Good point to put a super frame in brood box to get comb build up…..sometimes I run a super frame below all the time. I’ve found when they build comb below the shorter frame it will be used for drone production. Since varroa mites prefer to lay eggs in drone cells to get a few more days of development, you can use that lower hanging comb as a mite trap of sorts, just remove it after the drone cells are capped and before they start emerging…you lose a few drones but there seems to always be plenty around…

    All this rain seems hard on these smaller units .. I had some nucs looking great early May by the end of May they slipped into some kinda protein stress . I ended up treating them with antibiotics and gave them pollen patties.. we started last week with 4" of rain just kept giving.. cost me around 800.00 everyday they can't fly I figure those large nests eat around 800.00 aday in honey ...on sunny hot humid days I figure I'm making 3.000 in honey per day.. basswood just started should be best 10 days of the season coming up just turn hot and humid.. those large leafs lose alot moisture unless its humid that Rich Noel was just talking about that on his channel he went to school college for that stuff.. makes sense... more moisture in the leafs more nectar they produce in the bloom... I use to think heat killed because down south they have very little flow during the summer months.. just didn't do the work like Michigan bee keepers bringing in all these wonderful invasive plants past 100 years ... they have flow to be found down south just need to be more mobile this time of year.. that heat down there id die

SO I am not sure where your getting your carniolan bees but it sound to me like they are not sure bred carniolan bees your getting. As for saskatraz, those are just a mutt breed they gave a fancy name too and sell for a premium. It is a complete gimmick, they are so cross bed that they can't stabilize the traits.

      My first thought was maybe she’s getting old since she was a swarm but since her egg laying pattern looks good but her capped brood pattern is what looks bad with those gooey looking cells I’d say EFB it is. I’ve been told that efb is always in a bee hive, it’s not until they become stressed that it pops up. Nutritional stress especially a lack of pollen can cause it too.

    I normally give mine 1 strip of apivar kinda let them grow into the treatment.. that way they never pickup a mite load until I put them out for honey production .. makes big difference in growth and they make more goldenrod

      I like that thought! Getting rid of mites while they’re small I think is a game changer. This yard in particular is still treatment free since it is our breeding yard, we are treating all of the others but……if we are moving these nice onto pallets to grow……hmmmmmm lots of experimenting to do to see our best approach

    I know it stinks to kill the queen but it will be ok you have 100 more hives

      Yes indeed! This queen is very swarmy too so I’m hoping I can breed that out of them over a few cycles of queens

    Check out Bob Bennies EFB experimental treatment. ruclips.net/video/MZjIAtvbiW4/видео.html I started this 5 days ago myself, between last year and this year I have already burnt15+ boxes of frames trying to get this EFB out of my system. Hopefully this will work.

    Shook swarm onto fresh foundation is what we have to do in UK if we find EFB.

      I hear that it is tricky getting them to clean up the comb theirselves. They just keep on reinfecting theirselves each time they injest infected brood..I hear this with AFB too. Requeening and throwing on a pollen party is the experiment in trying out

    There is definitely a genetic trait for more swarming or less swarming. In my opinion
